Legalizing gay marriage would be changing thousands of years of tradition. The United States currently only has 14 of the 50 states that have granted same sex marriage. And it is not fair for some to have the benefits of marriages but others cannot. All individuals should have the same rights in society, and to me personally this does not stand by our constitution by denying these rights. Another argument that protestors of same sex unions state is that marriage is for procreation purposes. Since homosexual couple cannot procreate they have no reason to be married. This is a really hard to make a case from this statement as to the fact that more individuals have conceiving children out of marriage. It can also be said for the individuals who are infertile, should they be denied the right to be married?

This statement is rather ridiculous no matter which side of the argument one is on. The forms of marriage vary and always have varied historically and culturally. And now we are at the moment where we see other big change coming. Same sex marriage is that change that has already started happening in our society. There are a lot of perspectives on this issue and gay marriage is among one of the most controversial topics that the United States talks about. This group believes that only a man and a woman should be married. This is the way it is, has been forever, and should remain as is. One of the biggest reasons that people say this has to do with God and the bible.

What is written there is law and should never be changed. Philip H. America's population is growing, and the number of homosexuals is increasing as well. There are always two sides to each battle, and each side feels strongly on their decided opinions. The gay population seems to feel more strongly on this battle. HOME ESSAYS Gay Marriage Debate. Gay Marriage Debate By Eric Paul Scarabin Though many arguments against gay marriage are based in homophobia, even people who otherwise support the rights of gays and lesbians have advanced arguments against gay marriage.

One main concern is that allowing two people of the same sex to marry will devalue the concept of marriage. Those against gay marriage argue that marriage is between one man and one woman and allowing gay marriage would destroy the traditional family, which defenders of this idea value. Others argue that marriages are for procreation. This argument is related to the idea that same-sex couples are not appropriate parents and shouldn't be allowed to assume a family structure. Those against gay marriage often bring up the above points, although their arguments are based on an idea that homosexuality is morally wrong.

States Against Marriage in the US The opposition to gay marriage varies from county to county in each state, but repeated legal battles have shown that the strength to ban or approve gay marriage ultimately lies with each state's government. Nineteen states - Alaska, Nevada, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Nebraska, Missouri, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama - have explicitly banned the recognition of same-sex marriage, defining marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman only.

In Texas, Florida, Ohio and Kansas, marriages where one partner was a post-operative transsexual have been voided by the ban on same-sex marriage It is possible for gay marriage to be banned altogether in the US via federal law. In May , Republicans put forward a Federal Marriage Amendment, an amendment that would prevent states from recognizing gay marriages. The amendment was ultimately defeated in the United States Senate, but without federal legislation supporting gay marriage, a similar law may be introduced in the future. Behind the Arguments Against Gay Marriage There are many points brought up in arguments against gay marriage.

Some bring up the idea that marriage was created for the propagation of children, that the tradition of marriage doesn't apply to gay people, that it is a heterosexual institution. Lying behind all of these arguments is the basic idea that marriage is the foundation of the traditional family, consisting of a mother, a father and children. It is feared that gay marriage will destroy this structure. These arguments pointedly ignore the fact that the structure of the family has been steadily changing since the mids, as single-parent and diverse families grow in numbers in every country. Countries Against Gay Marriage Homosexuality is still illegal in many countries around the world, including Afghanistan , India , Iran , and many countries in Africa.

Homosexuality was illegal in the Soviet Union, but several countries formerly part of the Soviet Union have legalized same-sex civil unions or gay marriage. No European country has laws against homosexuality, but not all countries have laws preventing discrimination against gay and lesbian people. Australia passed the Marriage Legislation Amendment Bill in , amending the Marriage Act of so that it specifically stated marriage was for one man and one woman only. A similar law was proposed by the Republican party in the US in , but it wasn't passed. The religious and moral beliefs of a country tend to inform that country's stand on gay marriage.

Although many religions allow gay members, very few will conduct gay marriage ceremonies. Anti-discrimination laws further complicate the matter, as a government's failure to allow gay marriage is not considered discrimination in most courts. Anti-Gay Marriage Some famous people who have spoken out against gay marriage include President George W. Bush and Pope John Paul II. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his capacity as Governor of California, vetoed a bill to allow gay marriage and said he believed that the courts or another vote by the people via a statewide referendum should settle same-sex marriage. Publicity surrounding the issue has forced churches to take a public stand on gay marriage. Normally a tolerant church, the Anglican Church held a convention to discuss gay marriage and tolerance toward homosexuality.

The church ruled that gay marriages were against its teachings and distanced itself from church members who support gay rights. Case Against Gay Marriage Some opponents of gay marriage fear that by allowing same-sex couples to marry, it will lessen the validity of heterosexual marriage. They say marriage is union with the purpose of creating and raising children. They argue that children fare better in household headed by a man and a woman. Opponents disagree with equating gay rights with the fight for racial equality. They say that homosexuality is not an inborn trait, but a chosen behavior that does not deserve special protection under the law.

Some religious leaders say allowing gay marriages will give a stamp of approval to a behavior that they believe is immoral. Children Many opponents of same-sex marriage say that marriage is for the purpose of raising children and that two parents of the same sex are not adequately equipped to raise children. First of all, there is no basis in fact for this opinion. Children do well in homes where they are nurtured and loved, regardless of the parents' genders. Secondly, many heterosexual couples choose not to or are unable to have children. Yet, their marriages are considered valid.

Most states allow single gays and lesbians to adopt children, but only 11 allow two same-sex parents to adopt. The American Association of Pediatrics supports gay and lesbian couples adopting and having children. Many activists say that the laws prohibiting gay marriage are the same as laws that prevented inter-racial couples from marrying. Those laws are now seen as absurd and discriminatory and were overturned in Facts About Marriage Hospital visitation. Married couples have the automatic right to visit each other in the hospital and make medical decisions. Same-sex couples can be denied the right to visit a sick or injured loved one in the hospital.

Social Security benefits. Married people receive Social Security payments upon the death of a spouse. Americans in bi-national relationships are not permitted to petition for their same-sex partners to immigrate. As a result, they are often forced to separate or move to another country. Health insurance. Many public and private employers provide medical coverage to the spouses of their employees, but most employers do not provide coverage to the life partners of gay and lesbian employees. Gay and lesbian employees who do receive health coverage for their partners must pay federal income taxes on the value of the insurance.

Estate taxes. A married person automatically inherits all the property of his or her deceased spouse without paying estate taxes. It surely makes one rethink about this major societal issue. The societal institutions cannot be put to use to curb the individual freedom and choice of homosexual individuals. No one has the right to do moral policing and judge the people on the basis of their sexual identity. In a world society that aims to get better with time, no regressive outlook toward gay marriage should be entertained. Gay marriage is as normal as a marriage between a man and a woman. No one should take the liberty to critique or judge people who wish to or already have engaged in homosexual marriages in the society.

Sexuality is not the only dimension of marriage. Marriage is a personal affair, and no imposition should be made in the personal matter of any individual. Hence, there should be no bar to gay marriages. There is no scope for any person to judge two homosexual people who get married. Rather, by getting married the homosexual people are treading on the path of supporting the societal institution of marriage that is seen as a bond between two people in love. It would be correct to conclude by saying that the article in context emphatically supports gay marriage. Indeed, one needs to widen the horizon of acceptability and constrict the bias.

One should have a free mind so as to view gay marriage as a bond of love and affection, instead of stigmatizing gay marriage in the society. The argument is when denying same-sex couples the right to marry, is discriminatory and a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Many Christians recognize that homosexuality is considered a sin, but also recognize that they have no authority to judge others although many others believe it is their duty as Christians to stand up and protest the legitimacy of Gay marriage. The need for separation of religion and government is part of the foundation of the United States Constitution. They believe same sex marriage is a sin and that homosexual couples should be punished. They don 't think it 's right for two people of the same gender to get married because they believe marriage was created for man and woman.

They also believe same sex marriage deprives children from having both a mother and father role in their lives. According to them, same sex marriage "offends" god. Same sex marriage should be legal because it 's a civil right. People want marriage to be between a man and a woman but the government cannot define the word marriage. Same-sex couples feel discriminated by all the negatives they say about it. Many support the idea of civil unions rather than full marriage between gay couples. Civil unions are not fully equivalent to marriage and withdraw same sex couples of equal rights. It is unjust for any persons human rights to be set aside as less because of their gender.

No gay marriage has equal opportunity or same rights unlike blessed heterosexual couples, people have conformed to the notion that same sex marriage is a diversion from a different sex union. Cockburn continues on the subject with the statement:" There 's a fork in the road for progressives. One path is sameness, expanding a troubled institution to same-sexers. But that path detours the real problems of relationships today and their official recognition" Cockburn. If these heterosexual couples are able to be legally recognized then the argument of being able to procreate, as a right to marriage, becomes void. Marriage is about love not about offspring, or religion. Additionally, devout religious followers seeking to ban gay marriage feel that same-sex marriage is morally and ethically wrong.

Sean Cahill PH. In this society, people believe it is wrong to take advantage of the word marriage. In the Bible, it is wrong to break the marriage contract. However, same-sex couples share the same values as heterosexual couples. Gays should also be treated with the same equality. Gays and lesbians share the values as opposite-sex couples, the values of love, commitment and happy, strong families. The opposition to this comes from religious reasoning in the sense that gay couples undermine what marriage is Smith, P. One noticeable opposition from religions that is changing is that of the Roman Catholic Church.

But according to the New York Times, Pope Francis says that homosexuals should be treated with dignity and that the only problem he sees is that they are making a lobby of it. This argument is not valid and hence unsound. The first two premises are not in agreement with the third premise. The first two are in agreement with heterosexual marriages but the third argument is a contradiction of the first two. Arguments against same-sex marriage concentrate on four themes: Same-sex marriage is contrary to custom, tradition, or nature; according to ethics, people in the society have not accepted the marriage of the same sex.

It is a distortion of the true meaning or essence of marriage; from the beginning of creation people know that heterosexual is the acceptable type of marriage in the society. In our society, these types of relationships are not acceptable, and even illegal in some states. This branches off of the idea that our nation is accepting, and even promoting, sin against God. There is no reason to believe that the acceptance of gay marriage will lead to the acceptance of other nontraditional relationships. In gay marriage, both people are normally consenting to the relationship. When it comes to bestiality, pedophilia, and incest, there is normally or always no consent.

There are usually two sides: those who oppose, and those who support gay marriage. Two authors, Katha Pollitt, and Charles Colson, bring up the argument with points for and against gay marriage. Gay marriage should be allowed to happen, despite what some believe. Home Flashcards Create Flashcards Essays Essay Topics Language and Plagiarism Checks. Essays Essays FlashCards. Sign in.
